On May 17, 2023, a 95-year-old woman named Clare Nowland was found with a serrated steak knife at Yallambee Lodge in Cooma. Police said she was still armed with a knife when police arrived at the senior care center.

Peter said the officers tried to negotiate with Clare before she started walking towards the police.
He approached the policemen with a slow step, helping himself with his walk. When the superior officer fired the Taser, she fell to the ground and hit her head.
Mr. Peter said:
“She was in the room…she had a knife in her hand and it’s fair to say she was armed with that knife.”
After failing to negotiate with Miss Clare to get her to drop the knife, one of the officers fired a taser. That senior officer will not return to work until the investigation is complete.
Mr. Peter said:
“No officer, none of us, is above the law. All of our actions will be rigorously scrutinized.”
“My thoughts are with the family at this difficult time. I understand and share the concerns of the community and can assure you that we are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness.”
The residence is managed by the Snowy Monaro Regional Council. A council spokesperson said:
“The council is supporting our staff, residents and families through this difficult time. There are no further comments at this time due to the ongoing investigation and out of respect for the privacy of those involved.”
