Meet Landra Gould Reid, wife of Harry Reid
Harry Reid, former Senate Majority Leader and Nevada’s longest-serving member of Congress, has died. He was then 82 years old. His wife, Landra Gould Reid, confirmed his death and revealed that he breathed his last surrounded by friends and family.
Harry battled pancreatic cancer for four years. Reid revealed in May 2018 that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was undergoing treatment.
Landra revealed: “Harry was a devoted family man and a deeply loyal friend. We greatly appreciate the outpouring of support from so many over the years. We are especially grateful to the doctors and nurses who cared for him. Please know that it meant the world to him.”
Harry was known as the toughest negotiator in Congress. A conservative Democrat in an increasingly politicized House, whose rude demeanor and motto upset lawmakers of both parties: “I’d rather dance than fight, but I know how to fight.”
His career in Washington thrived over 34 years behind the scenes. He kept the Senate under his party control through two presidents, Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama, during the crippling recession and the Republican takeover of the House after the 2010 election.
However, he retired in 2016 and went blind in one eye.
Harry Reid was born on December 2, 1939, in Searchlight, Nevada, the son of an alcoholic father who committed suicide at the age of 58 and a mother who worked as a laundress in a brothel. He grew up in a small shack with no running water and swam with other children in the pool of the local brothel.
Harry wrote in his book: “I loved my parents very much. They gave life everything they had. But no child should be raised the way I was raised.”
He hitchhiked 40 miles from his home to junior high school in Henderson, Nevada.
Harry Reid was elected to the Nevada Assembly at 28 and, at 30, became Nevada’s youngest lieutenant governor as Gov. Mike O’Callaghan’s running mate in 1970. But as a young lawyer, he prided himself on take on the cases of misfits in society. like prostitutes and cocktail waitresses.
He also served on the state gaming commission during the early days of Las Vegas as a gambling (and organized crime) mecca. Landra discovered a bomb attached to the engine of the family van near the end of her term on the commission.

Harry borrowed a friend’s car to take her to the movies on their first date, but the car didn’t have a laser, so the two of them pushed it. They both laughed, according to Reid. “There are moments that change your life and stay with you until your last breath,” Reid recalled. “It was one of those moments for me.”
Once, when he went to pick her up on a date, Landra’s father was so against it and Reid so determined that the ex-boxer got into a fight with the man. He punched his future father-in-law in the face. Part of the problem was that she was Jewish. Reid said in 2006: “As our relationship developed, her parents realized it could be something serious and it was a very difficult time, the last few years of their courtship because of course they wanted her to meet someone Jewish.” .
In an interview with CNN, Harry boasted: “She never changed. She is 74 years old. She today she could win a beauty contest.
The couple married on September 12, 1959 in Utah, where Harry received a scholarship to attend a university. The couple joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Utah State University. They converted to Mormonism together after joining the church.
Together they eventually had four children; Rory Reid, Leif Reid, Key Reid and Josh Reid and a daughter named Lana Barringer Reid. His son Josh was born two months after Harry buried his father.
In March 2010, Harry’s wife Landra and daughter Lana were in an accident. Landra underwent surgery after breaking her neck and back in a car accident. At a news conference Friday, Dr. Elizabeth Franco of Fairfax Inova Hospital’s trauma intensive care team said the senator’s wife was able to move her arms and legs and the possibility of paralysis was gone.

In September 2011, a medical diagnosis revealed that Landra had stage two breast cancer. She underwent treatment for the disease, including chemotherapy, at an undisclosed facility in Washington, DC. Sources close to Harry said the illness of his wife would not affect Reid’s ability to carry out his duties as Majority Leader.
